Hometown Folks Make Good-Congratuations to Matt Smith and Brandy Buchanan

As many readers know, the Author is originally from Noble County, Indiana. Two high school students from Noble County, one from Central Noble High School, and one from West Noble (the Author's Alma Matter), presented projects at the recent International Science and Engineering Fair here in Albuquerque.

The story below is from the Kendallville News Sun:

LIGONIER — West Noble High School senior Matt Smith and Central Noble student Brandy Buchanan represented Northeast Indiana at the 58th annual International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, N.M. last week.

Matt presented his project a “Self-Constructed Portable Wheel Chair Lift.”

His project received fourth-place honors in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Division. Smith was only one of two Indiana students to receive placement honors.

Buchanan presented her project “Face to Face A Cross Ethnic Study of Facial Expressions.”

The two local students’s projects were among 1,510 projects from 50 different district, countries or territories.

The science fair started on Sunday, May 13, and ended with awards ceremonies on Friday, May 18.

Both students presented their projects to the judges and also to school groups and the general public.

“I was personally proud of both the students and how well they did with their projects,” said Eric Ruckert, science teacher at West Noble High School. He accompanied Smith and Buchanan to the interenational science fair.

“Just qualifying for the International Science and Engineering Fair is quite an accomplishment,” Ruckert noted.

Smith is among the top 10 acamemic students in the class of 2007 at West Noble, and plans to attend Cedarville (Ohio) University.
