THE ROAD TRIP TO LORDSBURG

A JOURNEY OF 1000 MISSTEPS BEGINS WITH THE FIRST STUMBLE

In the 1978 comedy classic “Animal House”, some of the fraternity boys met scholastic disaster head-on with the obligatory road trip. This road trip now holds a storied place in adolescent mythology.

Road trips have a storied history in American life, literature and film. There are probably at least three reasons. First, there are lots of roads. Second, cold beer is sold at many service stations and convenience stores. Finally, road trip sequences are cheap to produce and film.

Although not exactly disastrous, the road trip to Lordsburg produced some mixed results. But enough success to make another road trip possible.

Nigel, a friend that probably wishes to remain semi-anonymous, and the Author, headed off to Lordsburg and Silver City, New Mexico, to generally locate, or at least confirm, the potential existence of the Lordsburg Door. Our sources for the Lordsburg Door did not know where it is.

WE’RE NOT MAKING THIS UP. AND WE TRUST THAT ARE SOURCES ARE NOT MAKING THIS UP

The Lordsburg Door is an alleged time portal or interdimensional portal. These phenomena are also called vortexes. There are lots web sites that discuss these portals, such as here, there,
maybe still there, and perhaps definitely near Arivaco, Arizona.

There is even an art rock song about a kind of portal, Easter Woman by the San Francisco based band “The Residents".

OUR “LORDSBURG DOOR” SOURCES KNOW SOMEONE THAT KNOWS THE LOCATION OF THE DOOR

The search for the Lordsburg Door began in late July when the Author read the article “Fifth-Largest State of Mind” by Mike Smith of “My Strange New Mexico” .

The Author posted some quotes from “Fifth-Largest State of Mind” in his post, “New Mexico-State of Mind or State of Incredulity”.

Mike’s article mentioned the “Lordsburg Door”, an alleged inter-dimensional portal near Lordsburg, New Mexico. This piqued the Author’s interest, because he is always looking out for easy ways out of tough situations. It would be a heck of a lot easier to step into a portal that would whisk you out of this universe and into another than it would be to file bankruptcy or tell a probation officer something they would not wish to hear.

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE AUTHOR JUST GETS GOING

After some discussions with Mike Smith about collaborating on some research and writings about the Lordsburg Door, the Author began the research. The first source was a lady that will be identified as H.H. (She may later permit herself to be quoted and identified, but let’s hold off on full identification until we can confirm the existence of the Door.)

H.H. told the Author that she first heard of the Lordsburg Door from local ranchers. Ranchers told H.H. that hybrid, high-grade cattle would sometimes “disappear” and be replaced by low-grade, Mexican cattle. Apparently, some cattle would enter the portal and others would exit the portal. This replacement indicated that rustling was not involved in the disappearance of the cattle because cattle thieves would not “replace” stolen cattle with inferior stock.

H.H. did not know the location of the Lordsburg Door, but did state that it was located in a remote location south of Lordsburg. But more importantly, she knew of two guys that had more information on the Door.

SILVER CITY BOUND

H.H. gave the Author the names of two gentlemen from Silver City that had more information about the Lordsburg Door. And further stated that these gentlemen would probably attend the annual Silver City Gem and Mineral show which is held over the Labor Day weekend.

The Silver City Gem and Mineral show did not produce proverbial “gold”, but did hand the Author the proverbial “Silver Medal”. [Trite Alert]. The author met with one of the two gentlemen recommended by H.H.

This gentlemen knew of the portal, or vortex, as he called it. He did not know where it was located. But he did know a guy that knew where it was and who had been there. He could not immediately recall the name of the guy that knew of the Door’s location, but said that was sure he could recall his name. The gentlemen gave me his home phone number and said that the Author could call him later to confirm the guy’s name.

The gentlemen also identified a person in Lordsburg that may have some information on the Lordsburg Door.

Oh, yeah. One more thing about the guy that knows the location of the Lordsburg Door. He is a Sufi. Sufism is a mystical branch of the Islamic faith.

THE CALL OF THE LORDSBURG DOOR

The Author will call the gentlemen this week to get the name of the Sufi. And attempt to arrange a trip to the Lordsburg Door. But prior to this potential trip, we did some advance scouting in Lordsburg. That’s where it got weird.

Lordsburg is a town of approximately 3,000 people in extreme southwestern New Mexico. It is located along Interstate 10. And it is a town auditioning for “ghost town” status.

The first living thing we saw in Lordsburg was a dog wandering aimlessly on the main route in Lordsburg. No people and almost no cars. More than two-thirds of the commercial buildings were abandoned.

And it was so quiet in Lordsburg you could hear your own brain cells decaying.

As the gentlemen from Silver City told the Author, Lordsburg needs the Lordsburg Door to jumpstart tourism (or anything else) for Lordsburg. Or maybe Lordsburg needs the Lordsburg Door to relocate itself in a more prosperous dimension. That would be their call.

No one the Author spoke to in Lordsburg had knowledge of the Lordsburg Door. When one local was asked what there was to do in Lordsburg for entertainment, she yawningly replied “Sleep”.

IT MIGHT BE HARD TO HIDE A PORTAL ON THE SCRUBBY PLAINS SOUTH OF LORDSBURG

We took a drive south of Lordsburg to get a feel for the type of landscape where the Lordsburg Door might be located. The land immediately south of Lordsburg was rolling, scrubby and empty. A few hills jutted up in the far distance. A portal might be hard to miss in such a jejune place.

In summation, Nigel and the Author agreed that if the Sufi will take us, we will go to the Lordsburg Door. And the Author will keep the readers posted and perhaps more information will trickle in about the Lordsburg Door. We will keep our bags packed and the car gassed up for the next Road Trip.

THE DESERT OF THE REAL IS A PLACE WITHOUT LANDMARKS!

Wow! Rob, I am so impressed that you did the research for this. I can't wait to talk with you.

I just talked to "the Sufi" about your story.

He says it is "the Lordsburg Gate" not "Door".

He says he will not show it to you, that you are not worthy. Too bad, cause he says it's pretty cool!

You made my morning smile! Actually I almost burst an artery from laughter. Try being forced to grow up there and spend 22 years trying to escape! To be fair--there are many good, normal, decent, drug-free, sane residents who happen to be stuck there--but the ones that are not normal or sane----look out! Death and murder over the decades in that small community take on a new twist that horror films could use as a story line.

I have also read that the Lordsburg Door is near milepost 17 on the highway to silver city. could that be another door? Is there more than one door?

This door or gate is real enough but it's kind of like the spaceport... abandoned. If vortexes are ever 'abandoned'. It lies within the triangle between Lordsburg, Deming & Silver City. And you won't see anything silly because it's actually another dimension. Find Separ Rd., go south, then left into the middle of nowhere. Eventually you end up on a dirt road to the border... So Author...come on back & check it out.
